When Disney Channel Gets It Right

Let me start this one off by saying that I am in fact, a 90′s kid. Yes, that does mean that I grew up watching Recess, Hey Arnold, Cat Dog, Darkwing Duck, and many more, but I also began watching shows like Hannah Montana when I got older. See, back when I started watching it/ when it started, it was good! But as time progressed, the plots got less original, and Miley turned into a self absorbed character that I could no longer watch without the worry that I might actually tear my eyes out of my skull. That’s when I stopped watching it.

And of course we all know the slightly random if joy filled High School Musicals and “Disney Channel Original Movies.” I think it’s safe to say that Disney gave itself a bad reputation as soon as That’s So Raven came on air. So how could they get something right? WIth someone named Demi Lovato.

Normally I couldn’t care less about the seemingly random and talentless brats they feature on every one of their TV shows, but Demi broke the pattern. What could make me say this? Why here performance in Camp Rock, the summer camp inspired movie featuring lots of music (no it is not a musical). For the first time in 5 years, I walked away from a Disney creation not only against shooting myself, but legitimately happy.

So yes, Disney puts a lot of crap out into the universe. But when they get it right, they get it right.

Something New For Me

Today I’ve decided to do something new with this blog, besides just posting the random poem every few years, which will definitely continue. I’ve decided to actually write here. To make this a place where you all get to here about me, my life, my thoughts, etc., because I KNOW you want to. Welcome to my life! My topic today is FINALS.

Please tell me who came up with this WONDERFUL idea? I get testing. Testing is something that makes sense. It measures what you’ve learned. But who came up with this brilliant idea that students should spend two hours taking a super long multiple choice test at the end of a semester? It’s ridiculous! What you’ve learned should be evident through a presentation, a small test, and an essay. Mindless activities like filling in bubbles do not exhibit students the best that they can. If we’re looking for students to succeed, why on earth would we put them into circumstances where they won’t perform their best. The whole system is wrong.

And then you have those teachers who don’t tell you what’s on the final. We’ve all heard the line “I’m testing you on what I taught!” Well that’s just wonderful. Because we’re not going to be testing on EVERY little thing that was addressed in 4 months. And yet, we receive no other information from these people who are supposed to be helping us learn and succeed. Instead, we get the random little comments spread out through the year that are reminders of what MIGHT be on the final exam.

And yet this ridiculous system goes on. Despite the opposition, the anger, the stress over these sacred tests, that in some cases determine how you did all year, they continue on. Year after year. Yay.

The Priestess

The moon shone like a shiny coin placed in the sky by an angel. The bird fluttered down to the pond and landed with a splash. It swan, interrupting the reflections in the water with ripples. Grass swayed in the cool breeze, and the ground crunched as people began to intrude on the quiet surroundings of the pool and wildlife. They gathered around a rock that towered over the water, a black mass in the darkness. A woman climbed the smaller rocks that acted as a stairwell to the place of authority. It was fitting that this woman and the rock stood together, almost as one. The rock, huge, ancient, commanding attention, was perfect for this priestess to address her people. The bird surveyed the crowd of woman and men with an eye like a fine-tooth comb. The mass was dressed in white robes that stood out in the serenity of their surroundings. They wore no jewelry but an ornate piece of metal on long chains. The woman wore a long purple robe that lightly swept the ground. Her gray hair was visible as she removed her hood. The bird jumped into the air as it began to sense the tension amongst the group.

“Brothers and sisters,” she said, silencing the people. “We meet again.”

The Bloody Monster

The bloody monster has no goals

It is blind to race and sex

It does not care about youth

It has no compassion

It has no thought

Death is random

The bloody monster is not lost

It has three colors

Blood red, fiery orange, and black

Red as the blood that it spills

Orange as the tongue of fire

Black as the loss it brings to this world

It tears everything in its path apart

Ripping love at the seams

Homes are shattered into thousands of pieces

And hope crumbles into sand

With no visible ending

The bloody monster rages

It is hungry

It always wants

How many deaths will it take

To kill the monster that has killed so many

And tortured so many more

Will it ever die?

The Rose

Full of life and then deflated

Needless water poured upon

the Rose planted in the grass.

Seasons passed now is winter

The Rose wilted, waiting for

summer

Cold is the Rose, sitting alone

The grass is brown, dry, and frozen

Surely, summer will come soon.

The Rose needs the sun

It pines and longs for warmth

so it can bloom

Show it’s pretty colors

but it must wait for June.

Thorny, dead, unwelcome

in the garden it sits
